Water-logged residents in Louisiana and other states may still be assessing the damage following Hurricane Isaac, but officials are warning them that not everyone who offers a helping hand may actually be looking to help.
Officials are warning residents to stay alert to issues such as
identity theft, price gouging, looting and contractor fraud following the storm. The Alabama Attorney General issued a bulletin to residents urging them to evaluate all contractors carefully to avoid being ripped off, reports
The Associated Press.
"I urge our citizens to be cautious of those who would prey upon them through crimes such as price gouging, looting and home repair fraud. I warn the criminals that if they do so, they will be punished," said Attorney General Luther Strange.
The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America has also urged vigilence, particularly since hurricane season is only half over. The group urged residents to store important documents securely, so they won't be lost or used for fraud.
